Christmas Bonuses?

On Dec. 17, Congress once again proved their detachment from everyday American people as they received their annual-automatic pay increase of $4,700.

Now, we are far from any kind of anti-capitalist sentiments, but it deserves notation that both the Senate and House were never necessarily intended to be full-time positions. The Constitution dictates that, "The Congress shall assemble at least once in every year, and such meeting shall be on the first Monday in December, unless they shall by law appoint a different day." (Article I, Section 4)

Today, the average Congressional salary totals nearly $170,000--an outrageous amount, especially in light of their current demands on American automakers. How can Congress justify asking CEOs to take $1 a year, while they remain as equally useless as the Big Three?

Answer, they cannot.

Write to your Congressional Representatives today, and urge them not to take the raise until they've paid back the amount owed to the Treasury, in full.

A trillion dollar debit is no way to ring in 2009.

A Brief Update

Our apologies for the long absence! Due to some financial constraints, The Hillsdale Forum has been unable to publish a November or December issue, but we promise to be back covering the national and local political scene once classes resume in January.

With the Blagojevich scandal, a proposed bailout of Detroit's "Big Three," and Barack Obama's inauguration all in the news, Hillsdale finds itself in the middle of quite the political year, but we need your help to continue covering it!
